more Having finished the Sookie Stackhouse series, I need more Charlaine fix and hence I decided to give a go at the Harper Connolly series. Harper is a very lucky girl as she survived after being hit by lightning when she was 15. Apart from surviving the accident, she also gains a new ability- being able to locate bodies and find out the cause of death. Since then, as a way to earn a living, she’s been traveling across the US with her stepbrother Tolliver to assist law enforcements or private individuals to locate the remains of lost ones.
This is the first book from the series and Harper and Tolliver travels to a small town Sarne at the request of Sybil Teague, a key figure in the local community, to search the body of the girlfriend of her son who has died recently, believed to have committed suicide.
Harper successfully locates the body of Tennie but more trouble comes to her way. After a visit to the grave of Tennie’s older sister Sally with Sally’s husband Hollis, she discovers that Sally’s death was not an accident as previously believed. On the other hand, Tennie’s mother is murdered and finally after much effort, Harper and Tolliver get to the truth which turns out to be a secret between two families.
This is not a bad read and the pace is slow to start with. It’s a simple plot and clues are carefully hidden along the way, you don’t get to find out the truth until the last chapter, even though I kind of manage to guess some of it half way through.
This is very different to the Sookie Stackhouse series, a different take to the supernatural world. Similar to Sookie, Harper has ability. But unlike Sookie, who is louder with good sense of humor, Harper is quiet and the whole atmosphere of the story is darker. This could be due to her upbringing. In this book, it is reviewed that Harper’s mum married Tolliver’s dad. The couple turned to drugs and the kids have to take care of themselves. This results in very strong bond between the step siblings Harper and Tolliver, which forms another main storyline of the book, apart from the murder mystery part.
After reading through a few chapters, you can tell it’s not just brother and sister between Harper and Tolliver, the sexual tension is quite obvious and there is definitely something there. From their work, they come across many trouble families which give them the opportunity to reflect on their own and how they handle their tough childhood. And this is really what I enjoy reading most in the book. I will definitely give another go at book 2, something to keep me busy before the next Sookie Stackhouse is out!!
