I am a fan of Cormier's writing, and this is certainly one of his more grim tales.Honestly though, the writing is brilliant, you feel sad, and angry, and it leaves you feeling...dirty. Honestly, a book with that much power in its detail really is amazing. Now you've all made me doubt the ending to the book, so I'm going to have to reread it. xD

The book is intelligently written and crafted but perhaps because of the nature of the book, I could not (or was not willing to) invest myself emotionally into any of the characters despite Cormier’s focus on characterization and character psychoanalysis. It’s a tough read: the world Cormier paints is bleak and there are no happily ever afters.

Cormier always finishes a book the way it should be, but never the way you want it to be. Brilliant.

No. He doesn't kill himself. Thats a good guess though. Wonderfully written. Must truly be read at least 2 to catch all of the subtle descriptions and nuances.

An obviously well thought out thriller. May be far too gruesome for some, but the plot and characters are very convincing. The author's use of changing perspectives, while usually a cheap gimmick in most stories, adds a lot to the suspense and character development here. Overall, very good, but still not my favorite Cormier.

This is the first book I've read by Robert Cormier, but I've heard he's known for writing grim tales like this. It was so realistic and bizarrely strange and gruesome that I didn't even want to finish it. It's not the storyline that makes the book--it's the detail. For example, as readers, we get to know Kate...and watching her suffer intertwined with feeling like we know her, well that makes...more
