more This is Paretsky's first V.I. Warshawski novel. Again, probably not something I would buy but it was sitting at my parents house and I needed something to read. I've got to say that it's truly bad. The dialog is really corny and critical parts of the action seem extremely unlikely. Much of the novel is really dated (it came out in '82 and is full of college students calling police "pigs," something that was years out of date even then). And yet...and yet...Paretsky's been fantastically successful. There are more than a dozen Warshawski novels and at least one movie. Even in this book, the pacing, the characters, and the setting keeps you reading. I don't know that after reading this one I could have picked Paretsky as a future star but in retrospect it's clear that the spark was there.
