A captivating story about the 1996 tragedy on Everest told from the perspective of survivor Beck Weathers. More meaningful after you've trekked in the Himalayans.

If you're a mountaineer you probably shouldn't let your loved ones read this.

was really looking forward to this book, but i wanted to hear less whining and more climbing. what you end up with is a wife who clearly doesnt understand her husband and a husband who ignores his family...and no resolution. no dice.

Unbelievable really, what this man endured. Left for dead, not just once on top of the mountain but again in a tent. Amazing survival story.

One has to admire his determination to survive even when "death" is literally standing at his doorstep. Otherwise, it was an "ok" read, slightly boring and slow in certain parts.

I think that the moral is supposed to be that you shouldn't take yourself too seriously or your family for granted, but it just made me really want to leave everyone I know and love and climb my ass off. I totally want to climb now!

Compelling read. Even though I already knew the gist of the story before reading it, there was so much I didn't know about Beck Weathers that made the story interesting. I could have done without the chapter about his cat, it didn't fit in at all with the rest of the book. But I still blasted through the book and fell in love with his wife by the end. SHe's a peach.
