more A little slow at the beginning, but it picks up fast! By one of my favrotie authors, Patricia Reilly Giff, who also wrote Lily's Crossing, Pictures of Hollis Woods, and Willow Run, this book was just as good as her others! set in Ireland during the fatal potato famine, this book tells the tale of young Nora (Nory) Ryans and the struggle her family faces to survive on a daily basis. When all of her family and friend set off to get a new fresh start in NYC, America, Nory is left with just her good friend, Anna Donnely, an old lady whose talent is mixing herbs for medicine. My favorite scene was when Nory and her best friend, Sean Mallon, hike out to the famous Irish cliffs to try to find bird's eggs for food, and Sean lowers Nory down on a weak rope so she can gather the eggs hidden in the cliff ledges. It was VERY well written, emotional, and dramamtic. And so was this whole book. There's two compainions, Maggie's Door and Water Street.
