My husband bought our first two Redwall books while we were on our honeymoon in Italy.  As soon as we got back to the US, I bought the rest of the series and have been collecting everything that Brian Jacques writes ever since!!!

I found it a bit formulaic, everything just fell into place neatly.  It had all the right parts, but it was just way too predictable, and even though Jacques seems to want to convey the horrors of mortality in his realization of death, he explains it without any humanity.  His message is clear, the sincerity is not.Then again, these are geared towards younger readers, so I suppose that's a...more

It's been years since I've read this (like 1995) and a year since I read a Redwall book.  It makes for a marvelous adventure story, but in the long run, it doesn't seem that terribly different from the other Redwall books.  There are some Vermin.  Peaceful woodland creatures decide to fight them.  The main hero ends up on a journey so they can kill the bad guy.  Beyond that it was a quick read,...more
 It's been years since I've read this (like 1995) and a year since I read a Redwall book.  It makes for a marvelous adventure story, but in the long run, it doesn't seem that terribly different from the other Redwall books.  There are some Vermin.
