While I found it difficult to relate to the story's heroine, I found the books exceedingly entertaining. There are many secondary characters and each one is interesting; some are down right irresistable. While the books are disappointing in size (these are very quick reads for the most part), there are a lot of them! Sadly, the series is not completed, so those of who are avid followers have to sit through the year long wait for each new installment.   hide

The first book in the Sookie novels is good. Not great, mind you, but good. The story seems rather devoid of details and the conversation seems a bit off, BUT...that's pretty much all I have against it. Comparing this book to the 1st season of True Blood (1st season = 1st book), I like True Blood better. HOWEVER, her books do get a lot better the further into the series you go, so...more

This is A favorite. I actually found this book in my apartment building's lending library and once I got into it, I was hooked! I have loved vampires since I was a kid and after having read the Twilight series (way too vanilla for my taste) I simply had to read every book in the series. Or, otherwise known as, the Southern Vampire Mysteries. So, this set of nine books turned out to be pretty freaking awesome. They're very, umm, "adult", if you know what I mean, but they were great just the same. The characters are well developed and go through a ton of change, so that's always good. Sookie is just your neighborhood telepathic barmaid, when she gets tangled up in some vampire and other supernatural business. If you don't mind the excessive detail (yes, it's that kind of detail) then these books are a wonderful read.   hide

I read this after watching the first season of True Blood. It's not as good. Her writing style is symplistic and she glosses over important parts. With her grandmother, she doesn't freak out. I read this after watching the first season of True Blood. It's not as good. Her writing style is symplistic and she glosses over important parts. With her grandmother, she doesn't freak out. With Sam, she isn't as confused or angry. And Jason's storyline is completely different, even though it contains the same plot points. She's also very inconsistent. Vampires can fly with no explanation given, they need blood, can't go out in sunlight, need to be invited in, and yet Sookie still vomits 3/4 of the way into the book when she realizes that "Bill is really, really dead" and she's basically been sleeping with a corpse. The books are good enough to continue reading, but I look forward to seeing how the series makes things better (despite the added characters and subplots).   hide

Since i've recently become addicted to True Blood on HBO, I just had to start this series. It is quite different from the show, but all the main stuff is there. Sookie is a great character, and so far, I am loving this series. A great, easy read for those who like their vampires to have some bite. Totally engrosing, hilarious, and freaking hot vamps to boot. Go ahead girls, have fun!!

A quick but enjoyable read, covering the developing romance between single, mindreading, virginal and cute blonde waitress "Sookie" Stackhouse and her vampire "Tom", set in a background of multiple murders in a southern state of America. As always, such relationships between a blood sucking entity and a "normal" human has it's difficulties, which is a source of much of the drama and of course interest. It tends to lose it's way with a pre-occupation with sex in the 1/3 quarter but soon finds it's way again.   hide

Very addictive series. I don't know if its the books or my ereader, but I'm zooming through these.
