I like Bill but I LOVE Eric! Charlaine Harris' writing style is so casual that it makes reading the book effortless while giving the reward of a great story written.   hide

I have heard a few ppl talk about this and I'm a huge vampire lover when it comes to books. When I finally did pick this up I couldn't really put it down. Which isn't out of the ordinary for me but still. I work at the public library so thats how I get all my books to read. I have all the other books in the series at home already. I was fairly excited for the TV show on HBO and figured it must be good. Both Dexter the show and books are amazing so i assumed this would be. I was very wrong. While the book is not horribe, the characters fail to make me care. Sookie is kind of a bitch and the way she acts annoys me. I didnt find one character that i could genuinely like. While the book is not horribe, the characters fail to make me care. Sookie is kind of a bitch and the way she acts annoys me. I didnt find one character that i could genuinely like. Maybe i am not the target audience for this book, which could explain it, or maybe its just not that good. Also, the mystery aspect was very poor. I feel a mystery should present the reader with enough evidence that, by the end of the book, a deductive reader could put the pieces together and come to some sort of conclusion. In this, you get to the end and are presented with the culprit, who you never would have guessed because he has absolutely no traits or evidence that makes him a believable murderer. All in all, i feel this was a poorly thought out book that has a TV counterpart with vastly better character development and much more promise.   hide

This is the first on many books in the Sookie Stackhouse aka Southern Vampire Mysteries series and it is fantastic. If you are one of those people who refuse to read Twilight because of it tweenish audience then this is the series for you. The similarities between the two series are a little suspicious, however, this book was publish four years before Twilight hmmm........ This book is still a totally different world than Twilight with a few similarities in plot. Where Twilight leaves you dying with anticipation for a half way decent love scene, Dead Until Dark author Charlaine Harris dives right in. This book is NOT for children. The book has also been made into the True Blood series on HBO and I recommend them both.   hide

Everything from the mind reading, lack of mind reading, werewolves, and a scene where the human gets her ass kicked seems to reappear in Meyer's book from Harris's book. On a side note, Dead Until Dark is a fun read if you're into trashy, southern drawl, vampire-themed novels.   hide
