As usual, LA is vividly used as the backdrop in this story about rich and poor, black and white; and done so with a prescient insight into how entities such as the LAPD and civil rights groups use the volatile events surrounding the murder to their advantage.
There are enough twists and turns to keep the regular reader engaged. However, the subplot between Bosch and his wife take a drag on the main story line as well as portraying Bosch in a manner most might be unaccustomed to.
