Being an Indian and reading this book was eye-opening to me. The book is a testament of the resilence of women in different stages of life in different situations - and in India it can get extreme and not every woman survives it. If you are a woman and you stand up for yourself and your rights, read this book and feel empowered; if you are a man, read this book and understand why a woman always...more

The book is a testament of the resilence of women in different stages of life in different situations - and in India it can get extreme and not every woman survives it. If you are a woman and you stand up for yourself and your rights, read this book and feel empowered; if you are a man, read this book and understand why a woman always will be doing much more than you even if shes not a CEO. Like the author says - the book is a reflection of every woman everywhere.   hide

A highly illuminating book, not only for the truths it speaks of the often oppressed and repressed women of India, but for the hope found in the women who have made strides in literature, politics, art, healthcare and film. Unusually affecting is the account of how Bumiller's own preconceptions and opinions shift as a result of her own experiences and observations. Sorry to say it girls, but...more
