I've read this book time and again since winning it as a prize at high school. Every time I read it I find something new to consider. I agree with some of the other reviewers though, that the first half of the book is by far the better. Jane's childhood, schooldays and eventual employment as a governess for Mr Rochester are a riveting read. Following the discovery that Rochester is not quite the suitor he first seems, her flight from Thornfield Hall and subsequently is a bit over the top and the ending is pure Disney.   hide

Jane Eyre is master of her own destiny, and will not allow herself to be defined by her socioeconomic position, her gender or her religious obligations. I've never understood why this book is considered a classic of English literature. The characters are petulant and self-absorbed, bound by class. While this could come across as tragic, it fails to do so and instead inspires contempt at the unwillingness of said characters to work towards their own happiness. Specifically annoying is Jane's refusal to accept Rochester, whom she loves, until he is disfigured and therefore somehow more acceptable to her. Early chapters are more enjoyable, with thin symbolism employed, such as the name of Miss Temple, the 'good Christian' type who instructs Jane in the orphanage. Jane is alternately a slave to ineptitude in managing her personal life and a dismal failure in achieving the goals she is constantly in reach of. I did not enjoy this book, although I have enjoyed ones considered in the same class of novel. Save yourself the hours; you'll never get them back.   hide

I love this book. I have read it so many time that my version is falling apart and the pages are stuck in by scotch tape. This is a beautiful story that I find a little inspiring and that never fails to make me feel better. It shows that even a plain head normal girl can find love, and that people are always a war with their natural tendencies, but that dosent mean that they will never find...more

I love this book. I have read it so many time that my version is falling apart and the pages are stuck in by scotch tape. This is a beautiful story that I find a little inspiring and that never fails to make me feel better. It shows that even a plain head normal girl can find love, and that people are always a war with their natural tendencies, but that dosent mean that they will never find happiness. I find it a little beauty and the beastish my self, in a sort of symbolic way. It is worth the read, and once you learn to overlook the old language, and sometimes tedious discriptions and get to the real meat of the story it cant be beat!   hide

A story that grips you with the simplicity of Jane Eyre. Fascinating, romantic and calming for the reader.

What surprised me is that it has all the components of trashy chic-lit and romantic comedy: (1) homely girl and rich man form an unlikely and unexpected pair (2) girl questions their relationship and must sacrifice her love, despite her lover's protest, for her noble intentions (3) girl lives in sorrow for a period...more

This is a wonderful, dark and intense book.
