Some classic literature is just a must.  This is a must, but I do remember wishing that it read a little bit faster.

A book all young people should read. If possible, get one with the famous N.C. Wyeth illustrations.

Perhaps the first ever children's novel. The adventures in the book parallel deliberately children's play (hiding, dodging etc). The adults in the book are ineffective or unreliable which is psychologically interesting.

A whole host of books, movies and games have spun off from this well loved classic. Slightly more challenging for children than modern children's books.
