Nectar in a Sieve (Signet Classics)

A well written story that highlights the everyday struggles of the rural poor of India.

This is the second time I've read this book. It's amazing how Markandaya brings us back back back in time and it becomes real and present and completely heartfelt. Also brings us into the present with the conflict between a simple sustainable life and that of corporate greed, albeit in a much smaller version than what we have today. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Moving and informative. Nectar in a Sieve, is the struggle between life and death in a poor society. Kamala Markandaya tries really hard to make the readers relate and actually feel the suffer of the characters. She uses alot of descriptions but yet again she makes it simple and easy to understand and relate to another culture.

This is an Indian version of The Good Earth. Awesome! Had to read it in college and so glad I did.

Thoroughly depressing story of abject poverty ... there's not one ray of light for a single character.

Very poignant, giving wonderful insight into another culture and a hard way of life. I really enjoyed the writing style and the authors way with words.
