| |  I originally read this book in elementary school. I don't know what possessed me to pay the book... more I originally read this book in elementary school. I don't know what possessed me to pay the book order money to do so, but it proved to be well worth it.
This book is a classic for many obvious reasons. There is a reason why books like this endure so long. On one hand it is simply a great story about a group of sisters who are very different and yet care for each other beyond anything.
Then we have the Civil War story. Granted, the story doesn't exactly focus in great detail on the war, but we get a good look at what life on the homefront would have been like.
Thirdly, this is a book about people. Louisa May Alcott does a marvelous job of getting inside her characters' heads and exploring their relationships.
Definitely a girly book, but then again there are so many. Romantic, funny, and heart-breaking, everyone should read this. hide |

While their father is away in the Civil War, the four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, and their mother, work hard to maintain a happy and peaceful home.
My mother grew up reading this book and gave a copy to me when i was about twelve! LOL! not only did I identify with Jo, I fell in love with her too! & it was the company of women that I found so appealing the most. I also had three other sisters...psk! three brothers too! would often day dream that they & daddy would just disappear!
A real coming of age story! Timeless work, a re-read I feel!...x hide |

I've read it so many times and find myself crying everytime. It's a beautiful book and I love how every character is so drastically diferent from each other, despite being sister's. It's a very well thought out book, with endering characters that makes the reader love each and every one of them. I will always be reading this book, and when I have kids (wayyyyy later) I'll be reading that story to them to. hide |

I think I was caught reading a comic book or something that was not well seen at home, there was this series of 'adventure' comics in Mexico that were rather gory for a young boy of barely 8 years of age, so I got treated to reading this book from Louisa May Alcott. Have to say that the story was interesting, a good read. Would I pick it up today? would I recommend it to my kid?... I don't think so, this is not my style nor is his as far as I can tell, but, the book is available at home if he ever decides to check it out. hide |

As an adult, I re-read it, and while I still loved Jo, I found the book intensely annoying. The writing is awful! Every sister has to have her say in every conversation, even if it's only to say, "Me too!" And Beth is such a saintly little sufferer that I just couldn't wait for her to shuffle off her earthly coil. That said, Jo and her surprise romance with the older professor still make this book worth reading. hide |
