The Gambler (Dover Thrift)

An excellent read. I especially enjoyed the biting humor by which Dostoevsky points out the man's folly in thinking he can always rescue himself from his own misery. Note that the only time the man actually succeeds is when it is "written in the stars" for him to do so.

Dostoevsky has one of those voices that transcends time. "The Gambler" is truly one of his best works and one of the fastest reads.
