I was familiar with the story but had never read Wilde's play. I really liked it and it definitely made me want to seek out other interpretations, like the operas and paintings and whatnot. It reminded me of the Artemisia Gentileschi painting, Judith Beheading Holofernes, though I know it's not about the same event.
Salome is a truly amazing work, and ought to be ranked, both as the greatest of Wilde's plays, and as a companion to Wilde's "Picture of Dorian Gray", as they are in many ways twin portraits of the old maxim, "The wage of sin is death".
