The best book in the Anita Blake series, they all went downhill from here. This hooked me firmly, and I kept up with the series hoping that the later books would return to the quality of the first but was ultimately profoundly disappointed. This book combined the mystery of crime with supernatural elements and a very feisty and interesting heroine. I realize that Ms. Hamilton does not respect the readers that complain about her writing style---which is a shame, because if her later books held even a half of the quality of the first ones I would still be a devoted reader. Ah, well,the good side of this is that I have found other authors who are quality writers, but I do have to admit that I wish that Anita Blake's story would have continued at the level at which it was started.   hide

I'm on Book 4 of this series, and the only reason I keep buying them is because...well, I don't really know. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment? The informal, stream-of-consciousness writing style bothers me, and the heroine says or does something to irk me at least once per chapter. Maybe it's because I want to see if we learn something about Jean-Claude other than the fact that he's got a taste...more

Though I gather that in later books the author can't get enough of them, I haven't come across a sex scene yet, although there is quite a lot of very detailed gore. I have a feeling I won't be getting that far, though.   hide

Good but has not generated excitement (for me) that Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse) Stephanie Meyer (Twilight) did. I'll definitely continue reading them and see if my opinion improves.

I love Laurell's books; especially this series! Can't get enough of them!

A friend gave this to me when I'd temporarily run out of things to read. It was horrid. The premise ws interesting and the tale showed promise that it sadly ever lived up to. I peeked at the rest of the series and found the authos had pretty much abandoned any semblance of a story and just delved into literary porn. I wouldn't read this again if someone was holding a gn to my head.

Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer for adults... a world where monsters are real, and vampires battle for the right to become citizens, while still being as bad ass as you could ever find. Full of sharp wit and good action, but sometimes the gore seemed a little unnecessary and despite the sharp sarcasm, it just... lacks that Buffy charm. Still recommended as light vampire reading though.
