Is it amazing to anyone else that the subject matter in this book wouldn't even be looked at twice today? I enjoyed reading this story and have read it more than once. It is a classic novel that lends itself well to discussion. For anyone that might be intimidated by a suggestion to "read the classics" this is a great place to start with a story that is very prevalent in modern times and not just...more

THE SCARLET LETTER is Nathaniel Hawthorne's most famous work. It is the story of the young married Puritan Hester Prynne who had an affair with a man whose identity she will not reveal even when the affair results in a bastard infant. The story is well-written and yields one of the most durable metaphors of the 19th century. Made into a movie starring Demi Moore as Hester Prynne, Gary...more

Though a novel, this classic, better known as another literature text, captures the heart of the human condition, the liberty that comes with confession, and the turmoil of secrecy upon one's soul. A detailed illustration to Jesus's teaching of humble repentance meeting with gracious love and eternal condemnation to the white-washed tombs of pharisees. Those who read, let this book...more

I didn't care for this book because there was so much discription that I felt was not really needed like spending a page and a half on a rose that doesn't even pop up in the story ever agian. Don't get me wrong the story of a women turning a sin into helping out everyone so that the other town's people think the A stands for Able is a great moral. I just think that Hawthorne's descriptions took...more

-- I loved teaching this book! This book is wonderful and has a very romantic/mysterious plot that because it is written in old English makes the story five times better! Hawthorne wrote a book about two people who sinned by committing adultery, and the Puritans weren't happy. As much as people say this book is outdated, it really isn't. I mean, public scandals are a part of our culture just as...more

An absolute classic of American literature and psychological dramas. It's a bit rough at first, but once you get to appreciate Hawthorne's sinister-ly descriptive wiritng style you begin to appreciate the demon lurking the shadows. Really chilling if you read it with the right mindset. An absolute must-have for anyone seriously concerned with the interaction between faith and psychotherapy. Fromm...more

Classic lit especially interesting consideration of social impact. Classic Hawthorne. Flowery dense prose laden with themes of sin/forgiveness, atonement/punishment, condemnation/guilt, and the big disconnect between the inner life and the external life common to us all. Thought provoking on so many levels...
