Voltaire sucks.Here's an example. the main female lead character is disemboweled, then later reappears in the story. Her excuse? "One does not always die from such things." I read this in the original French, having been told that the story is not as ridiculous. It is. We may live in the best of all possible worlds, but only if we choose to avoid such mindless crap as this work.

What a way to have started a genre...A bit more difficult than your modern sciene fantasy/fiction

Cunéconde était en vérité fort laide... the best line ever written for a funny effect... tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes possibles, et en plus elle était moche! Finalement ça ressemble à la "femme qui n'était pas mon genre" de Marcel Proust.

Amazing, a book written centuries ago rarely captures humor in such a fashion as Voltaire does in Candide. Top 10 all time favorite book without a doubt.

I would give it more than 5 stars, but it will not let me! It's hard to name ONE book as your favorite, but something as classic as a Voltaire novel is hard to beat!
