Though the abolitionist movement in America has (so to speak) come and gone victorious, this was a well written and interesting, not to mention thought provoking book. Her character portrayals, even outside any abolition goals, are incredibly in depth, showing an understanding of the human psyche in regards to spirituality few I've read have matched. I would recommend this classic to anyone even...more

Once I thought this was boring, but then I noticed that I really liked it, because it showed more of a past... Going into the future.

What a great book and what a shame that it's still so often brushed aside...

One of my favorite 'had to read it for school' books. I cringe when people rag on this book. If you only know Uncle Tom's Cabin from 'The King and I', give it another shot, there are jewels hidden within its pages. A must read for anyone desiring to know our nation through literature.

My great great great great aunt wrote this book. She wrote using phonetic spelling to accentuate accents. The one that sticks out in my head is one of the characters saying- Shet day doe. Me and my best friend had to read this book in high school and I remember calling her and saying what is 'shet day doe'? it took us awhile to realize he was saying shut the door!
