This book blew my little kid mind away. An entire book written from the perspective of a sled dog! Like the DOG was writing the story!!! I hadn't even known such a think was possible, and, to add to my amazement, you still knew what was going on. More than that, you really cared. I maintain this book changed my entire reading world in fourth grade.

And of course, there's the portrayal of the viciousness in man. Jack London created an unforgiving mirror and forced us all to look in to it with these two stories. When I was a kid, I harbored secret suspicions that London was supernatural and could, in fact, turn himself in to a sled dog and that was how he could write so effectively. I know better now of course, but it was a fun thought.
