I OWN A CRITICAL EDITION OF THIS NOVEL. THIS IS THE ORIGIONAL SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL (AND ALSO THE ORIGIONAL GOTHIC NOVEL). THE ORIGIONAL 1818 IS THE PREFERRED TEXT AS THE 1836(?) WAS EDITED TO REMOVE SOME OF THE AMBIGUITY ABOUT THE MORALITY OF THE "MONSTERS" ACTIONS AND HIS CREATORS ACTIONS. AS TRUE FAN OF SCIENCE FICTION IT IS EASY TO SEE THE PROGRESSION FROM THE GOTHIC MORE GOTHIC STORIES...more

I've read this book several times and still love it. I wish that Mary W. Shelley had written more books, but alas she felt that it wasn't a woman's place. I still think that's odd of her, especially given who her mother was. However, I can understand about rebellion and feeling as if you are smarter than your parents, especially if said parents are rejected by normal society.

After having seen movies about Frankenstein, this book really surprised me. Not only was the story not about the monster, the monster was not a "monster", but very "human". ("Young Frankenstein" is a lot more accurate than the "classics".) The real story here I thought was very appropriate and timely given the issues and questions about genetically...more

But the story gets really great when he finally arrives and starts to experiment. He abandons he creation and thinks of no consequences of his actions. I wonder if we could all have a demon follow us around until we are faced to deal with our problems head...more

I had seen a lot of movies based on the character and when I read the book, I realised how false most of the depictions were... The only version that came close to the book was perhaps the one by Hallmark. The character portrayed as evil in most of the films did least to excite me to event read the book. Somehow I did and the nuances of the character and its relation with the doctor, and how...more

My daughter and I read Frankenstein for a worldview course. Enjoyed it far more than I expected. Beautiful, haunting, and thought provoking.

This truly is a classic book. Mary Shelley was pitch perfect when she constructed the brooding, mysterious, gothic nature of this book. Her anti-industrial sentiments and romantic style can be seen throughout the book. More important than crafting a beautiful gothic novel, her story also had an effect on following writers, and spawned various film, theater, audio, and horror stories. ...more
