Dipping back into this minor classic again. It's her first novel and it seems a bit creaky now but you can't help but get swept up into it.

Love Connie Willis but this one got a bit fuzzy/confusing. She does a great fun job of combining different times without actual sci-fi style time travel.

A young woman's vivid, recurring dreams seem to be about events in the life of Robert E. Lee. Is she channelling dreams from another time; and if so, whose dreams? This book is not for everyone, but I found it compelling, and have thought about it often since reading it. Just whose dreams they are is a question never quite resolved, though I have a candidate...

I really love some of Connie Willis's other books, but this one was kind of hard to follow. The story never made that much sense to me, and it was too narrowly focused on two characters (with some brief detours into Civil War figures). Not my favorite.

Willis does what she does best. The book works on multiple levels - History, Mystery, Romance. This book will haunt you. Oh, the ending... Not sure why this book is found in the Science Fiction section though. Wrong audience.

This generally disappointing book started out with a misleading title and went downhill from there. Since the book isn't about Lincoln's dreams, it's about Robert E. Lee's dreams, I can only surmise that some editor made the author change the name because people would be more likely to buy a book with the name Lincoln in the title. Strike one. Strike two is basing any story on the work of a researcher who spends his/her time in libraries looking up information in the indices of really old reference books. I'm a researcher myself and I find this excruciatingly boring, anyone else reading this stuff for page after page will probably just go catatonic. Strike three was when I couldn't figure out what happened at the end and really didn't care enough to go back and re-read to see what I missed. I never got invested in the characters and so I just closed it up and went on to my next read. You should, too.   hide

Connie Willis writes a book about history, about reincarnation, about relationships, about understanding. This is a wonderful piece of fiction from an intelligent author.
