more Originally written in Allende's native language, Spanish, this book tells the story of a fictional wealthy family during the time of Salvadore Allende's (the author's uncle) fall from power in Chile. Not a book for the feint of heart, there is little dialogue and most of the story is told in what English readers might consider wispy, run-on sentences. If you can value that for what it is and have an appreciation for the Latin American cultural value of spirits and mystical events, then this is the book for you. My personal believe is that Allende wrote this book for two reasons:
1) To capture the culture and emotional feel of her native land before it fell to the CIA assisted, military rule of a dictator.
2) To describe the atrocities that happened to her fellow citizens in the aftermath of the coup.
