I'd never call L'Amour a great author, but he's the Stephen King of his era. Always a good read, this one was especially intriguing. Set in the 1600's, it's one of the first of the Sackett series. If you like his stuff, you should check out some of Elmore Leonard's early westerns, like Hud or 3:10 to Yuma.

One of the founders of the Sackett's line in Aerica, Jubal provides a very rich portait of the type of personalities that pushed West of the Appalachian Mountain's for settement. A big acknowledgement is made to the contributions of Indians and other explorers makes this almost like a travel narrative. Loved it.
