 A beloved classic since its initial publication in 1947, this vivid, insightful journal is a fitting memorial to the gifted Jewish teenager who died at Bergen-Belsen, Germany, in 1945. Born in 1929, Anne Frank received a blank diary on her 13th birthday, just weeks before she and her family went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Her marvelously detailed, engagingly personal entries chronicle 25 trying months of claustrophobic, quarrelsome intimacy with her parents, sister, a second family, and a middle-aged dentist who has little tolerance for Anne's vivacity. The diary's universal appeal stems from its riveting blend of the grubby particulars of life during wartime (scant, bad food; shabby, outgrown clothes that can't be replaced; constant fear of discovery) and candid discussion of emotions familiar to every adolescent (everyone criticizes me, no one sees my real nature, when will I be loved?). Yet Frank was no ordinary teen: the later entries reveal a sense of compassion and a spiritual depth remarkable in a girl barely 15. In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the "Secret Annex" of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. Honestly, I have to say that I hated this book. Everyone says that it's so important, or that it's a classic, and blah, blah, BLAH. I could barely keep my eyes open, and would have rather eaten the book than read it.  Honestly, I have to say that I hated this book. Everyone says that it's so important, or that it's a classic, and blah, blah, BLAH. I could barely keep my eyes open, and would have rather eaten the book than read it. At least that way I would have gotten something other than a sense of having wasted a big portion of my week on this absolute load. This young girl was not an amazing writer, she was not some sort of perceptive genius - she was a scared little kid forced to hide in her home and started to write as a way to escape. Smart of her, yes. But her writing reads just like that of any other child her age. She has all the same worries and fears, albeit magnified to unbelievable proportions. I empathize as much as I possibly can with no experience even close to what she was thrust into. However, that doesn't change that this book was a big waste of trees, ink, and time.   hide

This diary was Anne's only friend that she could completely confide in, locked inside cramped quarters for years while being hunted because she was Jewish.  Anne Frank is so open in her diary that you feel like blushing and closing the book.  This diary was Anne's only friend that she could completely confide in, locked inside cramped quarters for years while being hunted because she was Jewish.  Anne becomes more than a distant figure in history; she becomes a real person, very 3D, as you look at her family pictures, read of how she decorated her room, learn what her dreams and hopes and everyday problems are.  You read about her frustration at being locked for years in the Annex, and of her despair at her and her mothers' deteriorating relationship.  This book is literally Anne, coming to life as though she were sitting there talking to you.  I feel funny about rating a diary-- someone's personal feelings and reflections-- but give it a 5 out of 5.  This book is 'real'.   hide

I highly recommend reading this book because it positively impacts your mind, spirit & will to carry ever onward with all we go through living day in & day out with chronic illness(es) because Anne Frank was so young & truly was an old soul in a young girl's body facing her very own immense battle because she was wise beyond her years to have had the resilience she had to carry on with her head...more
 I highly recommend reading this book because it positively impacts your mind, spirit & will to carry ever onward with all we go through living day in & day out with chronic illness(es) because Anne Frank was so young & truly was an old soul in a young girl's body facing her very own immense battle because she was wise beyond her years to have had the resilience she had to carry on with her head held high & with great determination the way she so positively was in the face of such horror & tremendous hardship during the Nazi rule in Germany as they attempted to push across various areas of Europe. If she could make it as well as she did, even for the brief time she was able to, we absolutely can survive & carry onward with our heads held high in the face of all we each have to contend with. Anne Frank was a true inspiration & to this very day her precious life still holds great worth & meaning.   hide

I have read Anne Frank's Diary,and each time I am overwhelmed by a deep sadness. I think the greatest lesson to gain from this book is we must uphold the humanity others, so that are humanity is keep intact. No ideaology, no cause, no personal vendeta should be allowed to render a person, group, or nation inhumane. We have seen the result of those who have fell prey to this negative...more
 I have read Anne Frank's Diary,and each time I am overwhelmed by a deep sadness. I think the greatest lesson to gain from this book is we must uphold the humanity others, so that are humanity is keep intact. We have seen the result of those who have fell prey to this negative phenomenon, and the results can be seen in the Holcaust, Rwanda, Kenya, and Bosnia. Our new edict is, " Not on Our Watch," and many live by it, but just image what we could do if we all lived by it. This is my hope, starting with myself and sending it out into the world.

I still read this book, and hope to visit the Holocaust Museum because of it. It should be read by everyone. Anne Frank was a 14 year old Jewish girl who, with her family and another, went in hiding for about a year in an attic during WW2. It is amazing how this girl never lost hope, made the best of everything, was grateful for everything, and believed in the goodness of mankind. Her father was...more
 I still read this book, and hope to visit the Holocaust Museum because of it. It should be read by everyone. Anne Frank was a 14 year old Jewish girl who, with her family and another, went in hiding for about a year in an attic during WW2. It is amazing how this girl never lost hope, made the best of everything, was grateful for everything, and believed in the goodness of mankind. Her father was the only survivor after the Nazis discovered and encamped them. Upon his return home, he was given the diary by the young woman who helped hide his family. There are so many lessons in this book, but it is primarily a testimony to the fact that the Holocaust occured. 5 stars   hide

The story of Anne Frank is known around the world.  Her story is a harrowing and sad one and I wish she were alive today to know the impact she has had on millions and millions of people.

I would love to see the Anne Frank musuem and actually be able to walk through those rooms that she and her family stayed in.  I couldn't imagine having to live like that but she was a very brave and...more

I would love to see the Anne Frank musuem and actually be able to walk through those rooms that she and her family stayed in.  I couldn't imagine having to live like that but she was a very brave and courageous young woman for sure.  We could all learn a lesson or two about life from Anne and the legacy she left behind.

When i was borrowing this book in the 7th grade, my school librarian said this to me "Cry your heart out" or "Eat your heart out" or something... i was shocked! 
I enjoyed this book a lot. It's a great peek into a young girl's mind and her interpretation of troubled times. I think its primarily because i read this book at a young age, that i can never understand Anti Semetic or Anti Holocaust...more

I think its primarily because i read this book at a young age, that i can never understand Anti Semetic or Anti Holocaust hoax sentiments. Also it was my first exposure to many sensitive issues - like racism, discrimination, genocide, ethnic cleansing - i think ought to be compulsory reading for every youngster. An amazing book.Anne confides so honestly in her diary (whom she calls Kitty), it does feel like she is talking directly to you the reader personally.You become so immersed in it that you feel somehow you are privy to this world in the pages, as if you're the first person to ever read it.Rarely do you feel that this is a person writing over 60 years ago.All the problems that she has most...more
 An amazing book.Anne confides so honestly in her diary (whom she calls Kitty), it does feel like she is talking directly to you the reader personally.You become so immersed in it that you feel somehow you are privy to this world in the pages, as if you're the first person to ever read it.Rarely do you feel that this is a person writing over 60 years ago.All the problems that she has most teenagers today I'm sure could relate to, it certainly took me back in that way!There is an overwhelming heart to the book.This is a real book, written by a real person, albeit living in very surreal circumstances.Her wonderful character, sometimes wistful and dreamy, sometimes philisophical and contemplative, sometimes sharp.Yet always her warmth permeates the pages.It's not just a sad book(although obviously the ending is very sad)it is funny, romantic, frightening and inspiring.I'll never forget this book, and I strongly recommend it to anyone.   hide
