This book is filled with a lot of interweaving characters and rich imagery. I guess you would call this part of the "magic realism" genre and I enjoy books that deal with spirits and other elements of the unseen world.

Another playful romp through the streets of Salvador de Bahia by Amado. Not as satisfying as Gabriella or Dona Flor, but the scents and colors of magical Bahia still jump out of the book at you all along the hilarious story of the statue of a Bahian saint that comes to life to rescue a young girl in love. Candombles, carnivals, capoeiras and much more!

Now this would make a good film (modernized). Excellent book. Magical realism at its best.
