A great book from start to finish. An honest voice telling it like it is with writing that just smacks you right in the face. Highly recommended.

I found this story rather frustrating to read, and inconsistent, especially in character and plot development. Not enough stress was put on WHY characters acted the way they did. Although it is a fictional diary, i guess i just found it frustrating to read stylistically. I also wouldn't encourage children to write in the way that Daisy does.

Really well-written story, but I couldn't get over the cousin thing.

Amazing story that makes you feel like one of the characters! all 5 stars for me :) the only thing is that i wouldn't suggest it for people under 12

Well written with wonderful characters. Only noticed the almost complete lack of punctuation when I was a third of the way in. Very clever. Have read more of Meg Rosoff since this one and have enjoyed them all.

This YA story of children left to fend for themselves after the outbreak of a war has a distinct post-apocalyptic feel to it. I think this is mostly due to the rural countryside setting, lack of adults, and the "faceless" enemy. You never find out what really happens here other than The Occupation, but that’s secondary to the story of Daisy and her cousins and their struggle to...more

This book is well written in some places, and poorly written in most places. It deals with heavy issues, but not in a necessarily ground-breaking way. The majority of the book seems to be written for shock value. Most of the characters are incredibly flat, and there are several plot holes. The best part of the book is the journey to find Edmond, and what they find when they reach where he...more

I actually enjoyed this book despite the incestual relationship. Even though they are cousins, I felt that the sexual relationship was a small part fo the story, and though her love for Edmond is her motivation for all things she does, it's also her love for her other cousins as well. I like that this wasn't a completely "happily ever after" story, yet it still had hope at the end. I think it...more
