Pevear & Volokhonsky's translations of Tolstoy & Dostoevsky are much better. They get a few key words wrong in Chekhov, screwing with some of the nuance. I'm still a fan of Constance Garnett's translations.

I have read most of Chekhov's later short stories and they are all amazing in one way or another. Providing insights in to the human soul, having a knowledge of both peasants and the gentry, Chekhov's portrayal of Russian life is wonderful. Je s'aime.

Anton Chekov's works remain inspirational to me. Chekov wrote about middle-class heroes or tottering peasants. He unveil those malicious rich people's conspiracy without a tinge of hatred or sympathy, that's what so characteristic about Chekov's writing style. Plus most of the stories have no exact endings and leave readers to conjecture and contemplate.

these stories are so beautiful when read in the original. Chekhov writes about the little people but with so much love.even the most insignificant story seems somewhat magic. also, his stories all have a little twist ... just like O'Henry writes.

very thick and sometimes hard to digest. but good stories and an amazing writing style, sometimes you get so wrapped up you forget it was written over 100 years ago
