The Prince of Tides: A Novel

One of the best books by Pat Conroy. About a man tormented by his past and trying to forge a better life for his family. The book is sooo much better than the movie.

I havent seen or heard some of those words and phrases in years. Patrick Conroy is a master with words. This book is one of my favorites. A classic that I am sure a lot of people would enjoy reading.

My favorite Pat Conroy book - and, again, that is saying a lot - although I think this was his last great fiction. My favorite Pat Conroy book - and, again, that is saying a lot - although I think this was his last great fiction. I can't say that I liked the movie- heck - the title person- the prince of tides - was only barely in the movie! READ THE BOOK! Another one of my favorite quote comes from this book - "She could keep a secret, but she could not tell a lie." I can NOT ride through Atlanta without screaming CALLENWALDE as we drive past that former home, now a museum - and my children think I am crazy- but then, they have not read the book!   hide

I just discovered the greatness of Pat Conroy last fall. This novel is the 3rd I have read by the author and I have enjoyed each one (the other 2 I read were South of Broad and The Lords of Discipline) . This novel is both heartwarming and tragic as Tom Wingo tells his story of growing up in rural South Carolina.

It took a little bit to get the story going...but ended with wanting to read "just one more chapter".

Just a wonderful, beautifully written book. Pat Conroy's writing style is marvelous--he transforms a fiction novel into a work of poetic art. Very highly recommended.

It's long, dense, and in no way a light read. You'll want to skim through some of the wordier, more "flowery" paragraphs but as soon as you do you'll discover you've missed something.
