If you have purchased this book - do the world a favour and burn it. It's not historically correct at all. General Kuribyashi is one of the greatest generals of the war. Clint eastwood and the author of this book wholey disregarded all the facts that have surfaced and wrote american propaganda into the story. I used to be a big fan of clint's until this.... fifty years later america is still...more

Quite a read. Defenitly not a happy tale; then again, when has war ever been a happy tale. It goes into great detail without being gorey and theatricle, but as a Marine, you can read between the lines... you can see in your mind's eye the torment and horror. It was great to see a great moment in history from a COMPLEATLY different angle.

Once again a movie ruined what I had read. Great collection of human stories all banded together on one fateful day.

I was wary at first and it sat on the bedside table (how much death and destruction can you read just before dreaming?) Well - the personal is political seems to fit. This book is a truly personal view of one bit of WWII. I am glad I didn't see the movie - landing on the beach was horrific. Still the details that the news didn't make right are worth the read.

I was humbled to read the story of men who so bravely gave their lives for our freedom. I immediately called my grandfather after I read the book just to say thank you. A must read although there is some language.

I have gifted this book to several folks. A wonderful book - inspiring, amazing, heart-breaking. One of the most inspiring and moving books I have ever read. I have gifted it to family and friends on numerous occasions. Unfortunate that the film version did such a poor job of conveying the story, the essence of these 6 men, and the experience they all shared.

This should be required reading for all high school and college students. One of the most touching and poignant biography's I've ever read and a tribute to father's everywhere. This gives both an insighful look at the people who raised the second, replacement flag so famously captured on film as well as the brutal story of young men's sacrifices on Iwo Jima. Truly moving.

On of the best book's written. Tell's the real life's of real people that were put in a position only one of them wanted to be in. ( The war bond drive)
