This is one of my new favorite books. I have not laughed out loud at a story in a long time but with this book I could not help but chuckle and smile. It at times also brought tears to my eyes. The characters feel real and I felt a connection to each one. Each one had personality quirks that remind me of myself or close friends. Meenal, my favorite character, was endearing and uplifting. I found this book patronising and tokenistic. Maybe it's more suitable to an American audience where there is less awareness of Asian Indian culture. In Britain, it felt like a cheesy introduction to Indian culture hidden inexpertly within a novel. Disappointing. I didn't try the recipes, but would probably prefer to check out a recipe book if that's what I wanted.

Easy read, but somehow she sneeks in some very heavy material and you find yourself learning a lot without feeling overwhelmed. I really enjoyed this book. I definately want to try making some of the recipes!

Picked this book up at Value Village some ten years ago and finally got around to reading it. Really good read. Enjoyable characters, appropreate amount of history mixed with story. Really great story telling all in all.

I did not like this book at all. I found it very shallow and the characters lacking depth. Does not compare in writing to Amy Tan's magnificent Joy Luck Club

Honestly, I'm not sure I would recommend this book except to a patient reader.  It's fantastic, it really is.  It's the best mother/daughter book I've ever read...But it takes a little while to really get you there.  It's a great feel good, love your mom kind of book, but you have to keep going through a few chapters where the story doesn't quite know what it wants to do. ...more
