more In the second of their "novels of the Hidden Cities," Lebbon and Golden use post-Katrina New Orleans as the stage for a struggle between, yep, good and evil. Max, a historian, returns to the Crescent City for the funeral of his ex-lover Gabrielle, who drowned in the storm, and receives a strange "map of moments," showing him events over the past three centuries in which New Orleanians fought the power of a shadowy, evil group called the Tordu. The authors lay on the atmosphere very thickly, and paint a compelling picture of the stricken city, but the characters, including Max and Gabrielle, are not fully realized, and there are a lot of holes in the plot, which gets downright silly in the end, when a sea monster suddenly shows up.
