Although ultimately I enjoyed this book, I think it could have been much better, and isn't as good as the first one. A lot of new information is thrown at the characters quite early on, and the fact that most of them just accept it without comment or difficulty really seems unrealistic, and makes it hard for the reader to get invested in the beginning chapters. I'd also kind of hoped for the return of Devon (somehow), as he was one of my favourites from the first book, but alas, no dice.
As I'm not a huge fan of Rachael, I didn't enjoy the first half of the book as much as the later chapters, as it was centered almost entirely on that character. Some very intriguing new characters are introduced in the second half, and despite the small amount of time there was in which to get used to them, I found them very likable.
Overall, this was a good read and very imaginative, but it felt as though it should either have been longer, or been lengthened and split into two books, so as to develop new plot elements more gradually, and introduce new world concepts in a more natural feeling way.
