The weakest of Koontz's books thusfar, whereby nothing other than the beginning and the end offer any 'gripping' elements. The middle is drawn-out and there is a lot of unnecessary focus on the killers (such as Billy Pilgrim), wheras Koontz should have stuck to the plot. Worth a read if you're in hospital with two broken legs, but stick with his older stuff if you want a good read.

Although I love the way Koontz writes and this is no exception, it's definitely not his best work. Tries to develop so many characters that even the important ones are not fully developed. On top of this, the climax and ending are so brief and ridiculous that while I breezed through the book, I felt almost offended by the end.

Not my favorite Koontz, but I enjoyed it because I loved the characters and I thought the suspense was well done. The ending was a little "out there", even for Koontz, but I enjoyed the book enough to forgive that. If you are a Koontz fan you will like this book. Add the dogs and it puts it right up there with "Watchers".

A fast paced thriller that doesn't let up, The Darkest Evening of the Year is a moral tale of courage, redemption and faith in the face of unspeakably dark evil. My only complaints with this one were it's ultra long buildup, it's very short climax/ending, and it's over the top villains that at times were SO evil they felt fake. (If one is going to write of evil in this blatant and straightforward...more

Often Koontz seems like a pale imitation of Stephen King, and this book is a case in point. Evil v. good. Evil in the form of a few psychopaths who Koontz describes with relish but no credibility. Good in the shape of a golden retriever with supernatural powers. It would be just okay if not for the ending. Disappointing.

The ending was rushed and there wasn't much action, Koontz is great with description and character's psychology but he's pushing it to the limit. I like his "old" books better....

The book certainly made me want a Golden Retriever, that's for sure! This is very much has a mystical, otherworldly and spiritual tone to it, which I liked. I did think the end wrapped up a little too neatly and easily--I expected more from Koontz, but it did make for a fast, mindless read.

How can I only choose one Dean Koontz book? I read everything he publishes, but being a dog person, this one really grabbed my heart.
