As the book says, it is from a child's perspective and this is a valuable perspective to understand not only to give another angle on the Great Depression, but also to appreciate how taking care of a child's basic needs can keep them happy and build them as well-rounded people of good character regardless of the external circumstances around the family. It is simplistic and does not talk very much...more

Very Wholesome, like Laura Ingalls Wilder. Made me want to eat homemade head cheese :) Laura Ingalls Wilder, but a little less girly.

This book reminded me a lot of my Grandma's life, and I love the honest look at farm life during the Depression.

I am enjoying this book enormously! I suppose it is for an "older" audience, but it is charming, utterly charming, and contains so much wisdom...

I read an article by AP writer Nafeesa Syeed about Kalish, and being a native Iowan myself, I thought I should put this book on my Wanna Read list. My mother was a young girl during the depression, living in a tiny rural Iowa town, and I want to know more about that time.

Funny and short memoir about growing up on an Iowa farm during the Great Depression. The Depression plays a very small part. Interesting view of the hard but self-sufficient lives led by many of our parents or grandparents as children.
