Middle aged Rita, facing divorce and the need to live economically, decides on a major lifestyle change. She travels the world on a shoestring, but not as a tourist, but instead as a participant in community and culture. This is an excellent travelogue of Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Israel, Galapagos Islands, Indonesia, Canada, New Zealand and Thailand. Her most memorable are The Forests of...more

This is a great memoir. You could call it a travel memoir, because it has a wonderful sense of place, but it is more than that, because Rita Golden Gelman is not just traveling, she is living for months, even years, at a time in the place she "visits." There are some similarities to Eat, Pray, Love, but Female Nomad feels so much more real to me.

This is one of the best books I've ever read! It's the story of a woman who goes through a divorce and wonders what to do with her life. She ends up packing up and traveling the world. She meets up with an orangutan researcher in Borneo and lives in a palace in Bali where she teaches a king's wives how to speak English. It's a very heartfelt and moving book.

Motivates me to see world travel in my future! And helps me to be an "anthropologist" even in my own family and town (respectful of others' beliefs and ways on their own turf)

This is probably one of my favorite books. It is a true story about a woman whose life goes off course and then she finds who she really is! Rita (the author) has a website that she updates as she travels the globe. She is STILL a nomad, and as far as I can tell plans to stay that way. EXCELLENT BOOK! I highly recommend it if you have have any sense of adventure in your body.
