Some may see it as a waste of time - in that it provided the first detailed history of Roland and the Eld, as opposed to continuing where the previous book, The Wastelands, left off - but I felt closer to Roland than I had since I started reading the series, and I felt better acquainted with his quest, as well as the quests of his antagonists. This book is more-or-less centered around a romance, but it's not exaggerated or ridiculous.
