This was the first Banks book I've read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. While not as richly written and imagined as my favorite books, it was well-put together, with interesting characters and plotline, and very readable text. Neither groundbreaking nor perspective-changing, but still a good read that I will miss now that it's over.
I read this book a very long time ago. But till now, it remained my favourite book by Banks. Typical of him, the ending of the book leaves you wondering about the many facets of past the characters could have had individually or with one another. Absolutely brilliant!
Wow. I remember not being too impressed with this when I fitst read it, but this time through I must say I was very impressed. Banks's experience shows: his writing is effortless and assured; and the mirroring and interlinkings of the two plots - and the outlines of the all-importnat but never revealed back story - is skillfully done.
