The most depressing book I've ever read, this story of compassion throws every rock at you. Its language startles and amazes me even after reading it several times over. Coffey, a convicted murderer and rapist with the ability for great magic and healing. Such opposite ends connected by a terrifying and horrific untruth. Well i never thought a book by SK could bring me to tears, but this had me sobbing from halfway through. Couldnt get to the book shop quick enough to pick up the next installment.. Was a bit peeved when they re-released it as one whole book, but liked the idea of installments as it kept me wanting more.. Such a powerful story and great story telling in a way only he can tell it.. So different...more

With only a few elements of the supernatural in his book, much like Dolores Claiborne, King writes a masterful peace outside of his normal thriller/horror genre and the Dark Tower genre. I must admit, he was quite successful with portraying the anguish experience by Edgecombe and his growing knowledge of John Coffey. Many make the mistake that King is just a horror writer and this book shows he is so much more than that. I had avoided his stuff for years making that mistake and thanks to a friend was given this to read. It is a fantastic book that covers so much about humanity and spirituality. King is truely a genius as he is able to right about people and create characters like no one else I have read. ...more

I saw the movie first, but read the book because I loved Stephen King's The Shining, and the movie was amazing. The book was excellent, and I enjoyed it more so than the movie, but the movie certainly did the book justice if you ask me. The characters are so awesome in the story, and I loved the sense of magic Stephen played into the storyline. It's a hard lesson to swallow, though, to know...more
