Excellent cultural input to Canadian dual linguistic and political nature. Basilieres novel is a mixture of Marques's surreal characters and Rushdi's wit in describing them and putting them into action. I loved it.

***SPOILER ALERT***This novel is a satirical story about a mixed language family in Montreal during the October crisis. Two siblings in a family low on the social scale go in very different directions. The daughter becomes involved in the FLQ and becomes involved in a terrorist plot that does not turn out as she expects. The son is a better student but ends up being educated in English. The family has a reputation for doing dirty work for people including grave robbing. They are contracted by a medical practioneer trying to create a Frankenstein type being. They supply him with the body of a man kidnapped by the daughter. The grandfather in the story is a character he is attacked by the crow his wife keeps for a pet. I enjoyed the comic relief that is used in dealing with very serious issues in this novel particularly the relationship between the English and French parts of the family and the farcical machinations around the kidnapping. The connection to Frankenstein and how this speaks to the separatist movement is also very apt. It also pokes fun at the politicians who perhaps took the treat too seriously. hide
If I could I would actually give it a three and half. Partly because I am bias towards his writing style. Intersting begining moves quite slowley and reaches no real point till around the end. Characters are brilliantly done they are quite dynamic. Gives an intersting spin on the french versus english Canadian history.
