Honestly, I know it's a classic and all but I really hate Humbert Humbert. The guy belongs in jail. He is a straight up ChoMo. ew

Far more funny and clear-eyed than indecent, you never forget that narrator Humber H. Humbert is a pathetic man pursuing nostalgia more than the title character. A savage comedy.

HATED IT. Besides the story being about a horrible subject reading it was painful. Where were the editors. And the movie? The original? Even worse, it made Humbert Humbert out to be some sorry sap who got seduced by two silly femals. Terrible. Why is this considered a classic?

Quite probably the greatest fictional love story of the century, unfortunately [for him] the half-sane main character loves a young teen, who has no parents to protect her. Yes, the main character is often delusional, but as we learn more about him we can see him falling deeply in love with Dolores, just not the kind of love the society allows. The second half of the book is some of the...more

A hard read. Not just the words but also the emotional content. Leaves you emotionally confused and if I may say so morally challenged. A great exploration of complex characters and unusual subject matter. I particularly liked the fact that narrative was presented as an honest account with all the facts left for the reader to judge. However, I wish I could've known Lolita's character a...more

It took an entire summer to get through this book the first time, and I HATED it. The sexualization of the pubescent girl... the European man's hatred of and contempt for America... the negative portrayal of EVERYONE in the book... I came to appreciate it a little more after my second reading. Nabokov is an amazing writer if a total show-off... Even I need a dictionary in several...more

Few writers have the capacity to transform language like Nabokov. His incredible knowledge of languages allows him to bend the written word to his will, and the reader is at his mercy. This particular gem, explores the pathology of a pedophile with both horror and sympathy. Truly terrifying, yet at the same time excruciatingly painful, Lolita is a modern classic for its ability to provide insight...more

You haven't really experienced Lolita until you've heard Jeremy Irons read this as an audiobook. I was a creepy child rapist for a time . . .

Incredibly disturbing, but also incredibly well-written. Certainly interesting as a piece of fictional psychoanalysis, above all things. In the epilogue, the author says there is no "point" to the book, but I would disagree... the main theme (in my opinion) was to explore the darker sides of human nature, responsibility, abuse of power, and innocence vs. maturity. Even so,...more
