Rabbit, Run kinda sucked. The rest of the Rabbit cycle is about as fantastic as writing can be. Rabbit is funny, honest, and cruel. These books portray one quintessentially American life, reflecting the 50's conservatism and hopefulness, the 60's unrest, the 70's scare and the 80's relief.

If I were to fault Updike, it would be for making characters go thru a cliche experiences - skeeter's radical afro-american philosophy, Nelson's cocaine addiction. What Updike does best is to write about marriage and affairs, and he is awesome here.
