Les Miserables (Modern Library)

I read the first half of the complete and unabridged book, and then became bored with the endless list of unnescessary facts about 19th century French culture. I'm almost finished now with an abridged version (James K. Robinson). It's intfinitely more readable, but in my opinion far to much of the story's depth and character development has been omitted. If you want books about God, there's the Bible, and then there's this. And Hugo's makes more sense and is more entertaining. I love this book, and I think everyone should read it.

ce roman est un peu difficile mais il est fantastique avec les personnages Cosette,Marius,Jean Valjean

Les Ténardier,il y en a qui pensent que ce sont de bonnes personnes. Je ne suis pas de ceux-là. Ils m'ont marquée pour toujours. S'ils le sont,il faut le lire entre les lignes parce que ça ne se voit pas en tout cas. La pauvreté pousse peut-être à faire des choses ignobles comme celles-là, mais ça ressemble trop à de l'extorsion parfois. J'ai beau y réfléchir, je ne...more

A transforming work. There is no excuse for not reading this book. If not the finest novel written it is well ahead of whatever is in second place.

JUST GREAT

My god this book is amazing! Hugo can get too wordy in parts (even the editor mentions that) but overall it is an amazing story of the power of love!

I have been reading this book on and off for the past four years. I know it's sad, but this book is a monster and since I already know the story so well, there's very little that keeps me going except for Hugo's absolutely beautiful language. But sometimes that's just not enough to keep my interest. I am going to finish it this time. Really. I'm half way through... only what? 500 pages...more
