This monument of 20th century literature has much more to offer than the love story brought to the screen by Sydney Pollack. Karen Blixen (pen name Isak Dinesen) was quite an extraordinary woman, and relates her experiences in colonial Kenya over the course of seventeen years as she struggles to manage a plantation and live an independent life. Her writing is delightful.

I decided to read this book for two reasons. First, I liked the film from the 80s that was based on the book. Second, I have visited Africa several times (six and counting). Really slow to pick up. Reads like a textbook at times. Wouldn't suggest if you have trouble with very long and very repetitive descriptions of landscape. Really only two very interesting portions of the book: a shooting accident and a section containing very short stories. Neither appear until about the middle of the book. Otherwise mundane.

took me much too long to figure out who the Robert Redford character was -- I wished I lived her life (with the exception of killing lions).
