Sophie's Choice (Modern Library)

"[One morning] in the early spring, I woke up with the remembrance of a girl I'd once known, Sophie. It was a very vivid half-dream, half-revelation,...more

I found this book devastating and deeply disturbing and never remember having lived vicariously through something so tormenting. But in its own way it is also cinematic and magnificent, touching upon distinctly American themes which make it a milestone of a contemporary novel.

I told my best friend, "This book is HORRIBLE!" She hates reading and asked, "Then why keep reading it?" And I said, "Because that's what makes it so GOOD. How terrible this story is!! It's miserable, it's making me cry and causing me to lose sleep! What a spectacular book!!" I got so sucked into this one!! Awesome read.

it was a powerful book, but i had to force myself to read it. Styron words were gorgeous, like poetry. Still, they did not captivate me, as a reader.

This was a selection of my book club (for 11/08), but I read it long ago and chose not to re-read it along with them. Although I had thought it was a great book, it was too painful to re-visit, especially now that I'm a parent. The holidays were coming up, as well as my youngest son's first birthday, and I just didn't want to "go" there... Still, I do...more

Styron's amazing command of language and ability to create memorable characters set this book apart. I picked this book up with no idea what it was about and no expectations, but it's blown my mind away. Sophie, Nathan and Stingo still haunts me even though I finished the book weeks ago. A must-read for lovers of intense and emtoional literature.

Styron tackles a most difficult subject, each chapter peeling away the layers of Sophie's story. Alternating scenes of the present with the past, the past slowly explains the present. Not an easy read by any means (Styron's vocabulary far exceeds mine), but a powerful book that I will never forget.

This is the best novel I have ever read. I am a history major yet this book showed me that sometimes it takes a novel by a master of the literary craft to really make a person fully understand a historical event. At an intellectual level I have always known at an intellectual level that the Holocaust was amongst the greatest evils ever perpetrated in human history. This book brought it home at an...more
