This book is tedious. So many freaking names of people who I just don't need to know. I liked the overall story he was trying to tell, just not really the way he was telling it. And the ending sucked. Why bother? Leave it open-ended and it becomes much more mysterious and less contrived. This is the kind of book that might turn me off Salman Rushdie forever. At least, I won't be...more

Reminded me very much of "Love in a Time of Cholera..." a rich and intricate story that requires you to suspend your belief in reality and takes a lot of concentration to wade through. It is very good!

Sigh! Taking a deep breath...It was quite strenuous to keep myself going from page to page. It wasn't one bit absorbing. For a person like me, who has always had issues with keeping track of family trees, this one was a torture. I second the opinion of a person here, who discontinued the novel as she found it to get convoluted. I finished it nonetheless. It's definitely not one of the best works...more

Rushdie is MASTER spinner of fairy tales for adults, in the tradition of Arabian Nights. This book is simply spell-binding.

This book definitely is not one of my favorites. It was hard to keep track of the characters, and you really didn't get to see enough of them to really care anything about them. The book has a double plot that is really hard to follow. And, the ending is so abrupt that it is very unsatisfying. After waiting 300+ pages, i felt like it deserved something better than that. I was actually...more

officially gave up on this tedious novel in the magical realism genre -- it just dragged on too much, so after postponing the finish month after month, I said forget it. Watch Michael Wood's "India" from PBS if you want to know what happened to the real Shah / Mogul king.
