Why did I wait until I was 46 to read this book? This is a wonderful testimony of the power of grace that surpasses the power of law. Wow.

Wow! This is a great book! A wonderful social commentary on early 19th century France, and a gripping story line that includes suspense, mystery, violence, drama, love & redemption, all the elements of a great novel. what an insanely long book! this might be due to the overabundance of side notes (50 pages on the battle of waterloo, a chapter on the lives of "insane" nuns) but the story of Jean Valean/Msr. Madeline/U.F. redeems itself eventually. Much better than the play...and when you finish, you have some latin and french poetry that you can shout out at people.
