Lopez reaches more deeply into my heart and soul than almost any writer I know. He was the first writer to make me aware of my own deep connection to the wild. His prose is lucid, lyrical and passionately committed to the beauty he witnesses but never sentimental. He manages to get the story the characters and their essential settings down on paper in a way that brings them to life for people who have never been to the places he's been. When I have read essays that deal with places I've been, he routinely gets it right and to help me see something I had missed. hide
