We listen as the surprisingly insightful monster deconstructs human society both with his thoughts and with his teeth. And when he, tortured, cries, we sympathize.

I hardly ever find merit in understanding a monster's side of the story when its evil is so clear: Grendel eats humans. Pretty straight forward. But it was interesting and even amusing to hear his side of the story. John Gardener did a fantastic job narrating a monster's tale of a raving lunatic (Beowulf) bent on destroying him. A really exceptional book to read! We read it in class after we had read Beowulf (for the most part, not the entire epic poem.) After reading this, a whole new story was lit up regarding Grendel, the "horrible" monster from Beowulf. Gardner did an amazing job with this!
